WREXHAM AND DISTRICT YOUTH LEAGUE

Saturday 10th March 2007

Summary by Phil Jones

The days top action was in the prestigious TESCO Challenge Cup and this seasons first semi-final pitted Cup favourites Buckley Town from the Clwyd League against Marford and Gresford Albion of the Wrexham and District League at Brymbo Sports Complex. The weather conditions were always going to be a factor in the game with the team that took advantage of the prevailing wind on the day probably coming out the victors.

Marford had advantage in the first period and with the wind on their backs mid way through the first half won a free-kick on the edge of the Buckley Town penalty box. The Marford centre forward Joe Broderick stepped up for the kick and hit a low shot past the Buckley defence and the keeper into the corner of the net for his 28th goal of the season. Both teams battled it out in midfield until the break with Albion just having the edge.

In the second half with Buckley now having the wind on their side they soon pinned their opponents back defending their goal. The Marford defence stood firm with solid performances from Ryan Davies and Lewis Arnold. The best Buckley move came midway through the second half from a corner which was cleared away by the Marford defence. From just out side the edge of the 18 yard line Buckley’s Aled Reece hit a terrific shot towards the top corner of the goal but the Marford keeper Ross Willetts stood firm and pushed the ball over the bar saving a certain goal. Buckley continued to press forward and went close a number of times. Marford had a couple of rare breaks up field and could have snatched a second goal in the last 5 minutes but the Buckley keeper made a fine save. With Buckley failing to find an equaliser the clock finally ran down. This tie turned out to be a real epic and a terrific advert for Youth soccer with it being a particularly sporting and entertaining game for both sets of players and supporters.

In the RAM LEISURE LEAGUE, the first two sides to pencil in a trip to The Wrexham Racecourse come May for a League Cup final showdown are Borras Park Rangers and Ruthin Town.

The Bradley Sports Complex was in awful condition for the Under 12 Semi’s but all four sides just managed to cope with the glue pot conditions. In the local derby with Boras Park Albion and Borras Park Rangers it was Rangers who bossed this one from the off. Zach Degale who has the pace of a gazelle raced clear to put them 1-0 up early on and they never looked back. Tom Duckett and Matt Thomas went on to cement the win.

Ruthin Town claimed the scalp of Garden Village who quickly wiped out a Ciron Jones opener through Towanda Mblusi but a further strike from Jones and a Steve Willisdon effort was sufficient to take Ruthin through.

In a redrawn UNDER 12 Tony Collins Supplementary Cup programme there were four games on the card. Rhosddu had their best away win of the season when they clinched an 8-2 victory over Marchwiel Colts courtesy of a treble apiece from Danny Jones and Jake Williams. Callum Parry completed the spree with a double salvo.

FC Brickfield had their cup dreams ended when they were well and truly beaten 5-1 by Marchwiel United who went nap through Kyle Elrick, Jack Edwards, Ryan Clutton and Rob Ward(2).

Johnstown progressed with a 3-0 victory over FC Borras Park Rangers, on target were Mat Smith, Josh Millington and Matt Jones.

Marford and Gresford Albion raised their game to scalp Coedpoeth 4-1 and on target were Lee Jones(2), James Griffiths and Matt McCarthy.

The tables in the Under 12 League Section Two had been revamped to take into account Queens Park’s withdrawal and the result suited Mold Juniors best of all so their 3-2 home defeat against Park Youth still has them in the driving seat 2 points ahead of Marchwiel and still with a game in hand. Tyrone Hobson(2) and Jon Paul Lewis bagged the Park goals with John Jones and Callum Howarth reduced the margin with Mold also missing a last gasp penalty and also having a goal disallowed.

There was just the one game in the Under 13 League Section Two and Tom Williams converted a treble and Ashley Salisbury weighed in with a double salvo to make up Brickfields their nap hand 5-2 win against Marchwiel who responded through Jordan Cartwright and Ben Duffy.

The key action at Under 14 level was in the quarter finals of the league Cup and amongst the favourites to do well are Borras who polished off Park Youth 3-0 with the help of a goal apiece from Tom Wells. Jack Challinor and Tom Mayers.

Bala progressed 1-0 following a narrow 1-0 win over Coedpoeth United.

Queens Park were scalped 4-0 by FC Borras Park and the jewel in their crown was Rhys Williams who clinched a hat-trick, completing the spree was Callum White.

Marchwiel United were just outshaded 2-1 by Ruthin Town whose marksmen were Will Bowman and Shaun Jones and hitting back was Andy Hughes.

Borras Park Albion progressed with a comfortable 3-0 win at Park. On target were Tom Meyers, Tom Wells and Jack Chaloner.

There was a four game UNDER 14 Joe Jones Supplementary Cup Round 1programme and making headway were Ruthin Town Under 13’s who notched the scalp of the older Garden Village side 4-0. Josh Davies, Iolo Hughes, Phil Roberts and Dave Finney were their marksmen.

Out go Chirk Youth, they were floored 8-3 at home by Llay United. Ryan Fisher was amongst the days top scorers weighing in with a five goal haul and Rob Humphreys(2) and Adam Williams sealed their passage.

Penycae Youth secured a safe semi final berth defeating Corwen Youth U13’s 5-1. Man of the match Sam Williams was the jewel in their crown with Wes Parry and Jason Hynde completing the rout with a half volley. Netting a lone consolation goal for Corwen was Tom Williams.

Broncoed Tigers have failed to find the kind of form which made them such a force last year and they were ‘bombed out’ 6-4 at home by Brickfield Rangers despite the fact Ben Vale converted a hat-trick and Danny Bolland was also on target. Liam Sklenar is proving hot property notching four and completing their tally was Josh Jones and Lewis Jones.

The key action in the afternoon programme was the quarter finals of the North East Wales Challenge Cup. In the top match, Queens Park and Hawarden Rangers squared their match after full and extra time 3-3. Nathan Buckley(2) and Sean Skimmins had the Park in the hunt but Rangers went on to win the penalty shoot out.

Out go one of the favourites Acrefair, they were beaten 1-0 by Borras Park Albion who netted the only goal of the game through Jonathan Williams.

Ruthin Town accounted for Brymbo 2-1 with strikes from Sam Cartwright and Danny Maclean.

Mynydd Isa found Ewloe Harriers too hot to handle with the Harriers going through on the back of goals from ace predator Danny Sullivan(2), Carl Thomas and Anthony Bailey.

In the Under 15 League, league leaders Marchwiel United came a cropper against the leagues most improved side Rhostyllen who deserved the points after John McGrath added to a brace of goals scored by man of the match Tibor Bloc. United were gallant losers and were quick to concede they were beaten by a better side albeit they had been on target with a Jordan Davies openor and a Tom Roden penalty.

Bala Juniors tamed Ruabon Villa 3-1 but a regrouped Llay United lost 5-1 at home to Marford and Gresford Albion. Josh Morris notched the Llay reply with Rob Morris and two goals apiece from Ben Stritch and Grant Hughes making up the Albion nap hand.

Tom Bartley, Mark Burrows and Andy Jackson hit back for Coedpoeth despite being defeated 5-3 by Rhos Aelwyd whose marksmen were Mike Rowlands who notched a treble, Nathan Evans and Craig Spencer.

Dion Jones converted a controversial penalty for Ruthin Town in their 1-1 draw with Garden Village who had through Gareth Rogers at that stage.

In the outstanding Kevin Wright Memorial Cup Round 1 game, Park Youth beat Johnstown Youth 6-4 in a high scoring game. Aaron Blackwell and Callum Parlour netted two goals apiece with Deiniol Williams and Aled Evans completing the scoring. Jamie Rogers fired a hat-trick for Johnstown and still finished on the losing side and Tom Cambell also scored.

In an outstanding league cup tie, Park Under 16’s chalked up a 3-1 victory over Chirk Under 15’s. On target were Jack Andrews(2) and Liam Bateman with Josh Roberts hitting back.
