WREXHAM AND DISTRICT YOUTH LEAGUE

Saturday 14th April 007

Summary by Phil Jones

The days top action was in the Tesco Cup and a huge crowd basked in the Brymbo sun to watch Ruthin Town defeat Marford and Gresford Albion 2-0. The prize for this match was not only the North East Wales F.A. Trophy, but also, to play in the National qualifying event at Cardiff on May 6th. Marford Gresford had comfortably beat Ruthin in their previous league encounter some weeks ago. Following that performance and their fine success against possible cup favourites, Buckley Town, so Ruthin did start this tie as slight underdogs.

The game started competitively with tight midfield play, both captains, Josh Davies of Ruthin and Josh Knowles of Marford getting involved straight from the start and highlighted the high commitment of both sides. After ten minutes of the start, Ruthin started to edge in front and created some good chances. Dan Lloyd, Iolo Hughes and Matt Richards could have put Ruthin ahead but were prevented from doing so due to good goal keeping from Ross Willetts and good strong defending from Ryan Davies and Ben Price.

It was Iolo Hughes who put Ruthin ahead after twenty minutes after his free kick from the corner of the goal area was hit into the far top corner of the net giving the keeper little chance of saving. This lead could have been increased later after Hughes’s effort was deemed not to have crossed the line by match referee Ryder.

Matt Richards of Ruthin caused problems for the Marford defence for the remainder of the half and his crosses deserved better finishing. Marford had a great chance to equalise on the interval, Ryan Davies unchallenged header from a corner hit just passed wide of the bar and post.

Ruthin started the second half the stronger with Marford only having a couple of goal scoring opportunities. Lee Broderick had two long range shots that went close. Ruthin with pace player, Kristian Pierce, always looked like scoring and Iolo Hughes got his second goal of the game after Richards had put him through once again to score with his left shot beating Willets.

This was a very good all round team performance from Ruthin and it was difficult to highlight a man of the match. Although, Mike Jones at the centre of the defence for Ruthin looked sheer class and Iolo. Hughes once again demonstrated why he is possibly one of league’s best forwards.

There was a huge shock in store for title hopefuls Marchwiel United in the Under 12 League Section One who were held to a 1-1 draw at FC Borras Rangers and it means they can no longer catch league leaders Mold Juniors who were without a game. Jamie Pritchard had provided the hosts with the lead but Dominic White levelled the match.

Brymbo Lodge shared the honours in a 2-2 draw with Acrefair Youth, Matt Worrall and Jack Mounford from his own half netted the hosts goals with Tom May and Josh Evans hitting back.

Brickfield Rangers still have an outside chance of the title after picking off Johnstown Youth 3-1 with strikes from Dean Dodd,Dan Sheriff and Ryan Hughes with Josh Millington hitting back.

Marford and Gresford Albion shared four goals and the points with Rhosddu United, Jack Bunkell and James Griffiths were the Marford marksmen with an OG and Jordan Edwards responding.

The top two sides in Section Two hit 38 goals between them. Current league leaders Ruthin Town ‘peppered’ 16 goals past Maelor Youth and on the score sheet were Oliver Hughes with four goals, Harri Owen and Stephen Wilsden with a treble apiece plus Iwan Davies(2), Ciran Jones(2), Osian Davies and Elgan Lightfoot.

Borras Park Rangers did slightly better and amongst the scorers in their whitewash at Marchwiel United were Matt Thomas, Tom Duckett and Jordan Williams who all weighed in with five goal salvo’s, Zac Degale, Zac Forber with a hat-trick, Zac Bryan and James Roberts.

Bala cruised to an 8-1 victory over Coedpoeth who hit back through Andy Williams.

Chirk Youth grabbed a consolation goal through Ben Wilson but were on the wrong end of a 10-1 score line against Garden Village who made the most of the perfect playing conditions at Holyhead Road. Ben Williams started the goal rush with a perfect opener and then goals flowed from man of the match Ethon Turton who also made four of the remaining goals carved out by Luke Jones, Sam Felgate(2), Hari Gould, Jimmi Lee, Luke Davies(2) and Steve Beilby

At Under 13 League level in Section One, there was quite an amazing game at Cefn United who raised their game to hold Llangollen Youth to a 5-5 draw. In dramatic fashion, Cefn went 4-0 up with goals from Jack Richards(2), Darren Szabu and Andrew Butterton but Llan turned th egame on its head and hit back to lead 5-4 with Kevin Jones, Nathan Holland(2), James Denton and Ryan Hughes making up their nap hand. Salvaging a deserved point for the hosts was Ryan Jackson.

Penycae Youth still rule the roost however and their 12-0 victory over Maelor Youth strengthened their position at the top. Callum Edge was once more their jewel in the crown netting six times, Ryan M Jones notched twice, Ryan A Jones scored a hat-trick with Matthew Griffiths getting his first ever goal for the club.

In Sction Two, champions Rhos Aelwyd whitewashed Brymbo Lodge 10-0 and taking them into double figures were Dave Jones with his first goal of the season, Ifan Hughes, Iolo Francis, Ryan Jenkins and Rob Salathiel and Josh Griffiths who scored a hat-trick apiece.

Corwen Youth were on target through Tom Williams and Jason Williams in their 2-2 draw with Bala.

Chirk Youth were in terrific form to beat the leagues in form side Rhostyllen Youth 9-2, their marksmen were man of the match Keiran Williams who bagged four goals, Josh Langford converted a hat-trick and making up the spree were Lewis Penrose and Steve Stokes. Replying for the visitors were John McGrath with a close range header and Tibor Bloc.

Making up the Garden Village nap hand were Adam Smith(2), Duane Jones(2) and Gareth Rogers as they beat Rhosddu United 5-2. Hitting back for understrength Rhosddu were Jordon Hollinsworth and Liam Badwick.

Bala defeated Marford and Gresford Albion 3-2 who replied through Dan McDonald and Grant Hughes.

Llay United were on the wrong end of a 12-2 drubbing at home to Park Youth but managed a two goal response via Andy Mathias and Josh Morris. In fine form for Park was Luke Roberts who was the days top marksmen helping himself to an eight goal return. Completing the rout with four goals was Aaron Blackwell.

In Section Two, Chirk now know that as a bare minimum they wil be sharing the title and one more point from 12 will have them winning it outright after a flawless 5-0 victory over Brickfield. Matt Cooke completed a further hat-trick and Nathan Edwards and Lee Griffiths made up their nap hand.

Bala are the only side that can mathematically catch Chirk and they had a slim 2-1 win at FC Borras Park who replied through Malcolm Wareham.

Chris Knowles with a stunning header, Will Evans and a 30 yard strike fro Jack Rennie enabled Maelor Youth to triumph 3-2 over Llay United who hit back with two goals from Jamie Heath.
