WREXHAM AND DISTRICT YOUTH LEAGUE

Saturday 17th January 2009

Summary by Phil Jones

The key action at the weekend was in the ¼ Finals of the Tesco Cup where hot favourites Borras Park Rangers had their hopes dashed by Penyffordd who conceded a 1st penalty despatched by Louis Edwards. It looked as if they were going to go into the break all square but the referee was unable to judge how far the ball had crossed the goal-line following a shot by Ben Williams. The second half was only moments old however when Williams struck a fierce left foot shot to pull the visitors level. They then grew in stature and ended Rangers hopes of making any further progress in this competition and Ryan Hughes and Danny Leecemented the success.

Buckley Town crashed out of the competition going down by the odd goal in seven against Acrefair Youth who had the games best player in Jordon Powell who converted a hat-trick. Callum Littler, Gerard Jones and an og had things evenly poised at 3-3 but a 4th goal by Acrefair’s Connor Rogers proved decisive.

Maelor Youth trailed 4-1 at half time and they looked to be heading out of the competition but in a fine revival they turned this game on its head to progress 7-5. On target were Jason Edwards(2), Daniel Hampson, Mathew Mills, Rhys Williams and Taylor Jones.

Also making their way to the semi-finals were Garden Village who were involved in a late show at Marchwiel Youth who were looking good when they were protecting a 2-1 lead carved out by Richard Bevis and Harry Powell but in a late sortie, the visitors finished strong and goals from Sam Molyneux, Ross White and Tyler Roberts turned this tie on its head to win 3-2.

There was plenty of cup action in the afternoon with the top action being in the 3rd Round of the league cup and there were shocks galore. As so often happens there were great examples of Under 15 sides holding their own against boys from the higher age band and in fact this came true in four of the eight ties contested. A great illustration being Marchwiel whose Under 15 side conquered Rhosddu Under 16’s 1-0. A solitary goal by Naim Arzhad separated the sides.

Chirk 15’s dumped out Bala Under 16’s also by the narrowest of margins though. Richard Palmer with a double salvo brought the score back to 2-2 enabling Nick Pearce to snatch a last gasp winner.

Mold Jets Under 15’s caused a stir by claiming the scalp of Brickfield Under 16’s, George Baxter and Ryan Williams were on target with Liam Sklenar replying but Mike Peters was outstanding despite finishing on the losing side.

Also able to celebrate this way were Rhos Aelwyd who knocked out Maelor Under 16’s 5-4. Rhos’s star man was Ryan Jones who weighed in with a treble. Dan Gibbons and Dafydd Robertson made up the Rhos nap hand with Lewis Williams(2), Mark Mottershead an Nick Scheisling getting Maelor to a whisker of progress.

Plucky Coedpoeth went close at Ruthin Town and a late leveller from Jake Shaw took this tie into extra time but Ruthin regained their composure to progress 4-1. Their marksmen were Dafydd Davies(2), Wil Bowman and Rashard Jones.

Match of the day was at New Road where Garden Village narrowly edged out rivals Chirk 2-1 in a real thrilling encounter which had Chirk protecting an early lead. Josh Phillips levelled and then John Geddis saved a Chirk penalty. The miss proved costly as Tom Seward grabbed an extra time winner.

Strongly tipped to reach the Racecourse in May are Venture who looked sheer class when polishing off Ruthin Town 6-1. Nathan Smith and Josh Roberts netted two goals apiece with Ryan Forward and James Rogers cementing the win. Hitting back for Ruthin was Matt Richards.

Borras Park Albion were the days highest scorers and they demolished Marchwiel United 14-1. ‘Top gun’ was Niall Challoner who weighed in with a five goal salvo. Ryan Jones converted a hat-trick and completing the spree were Steven Jones(2), Dominic Williams, Liam Pearce, Jack Chaloner and Michael Hencher.

There was just the one UNDER 16 KEVIN WRIGHT MEMORIAL CUP ROUND 1 game and it involved Ewloe Harriers being heavily beaten 10-1 by Johnstown who were in rampant form to win 10-1. Amongst the victors scorers were Ashley Colburn, (2), Gary Conway(2), Adam Howell, Levi Chaloner and Jack Griffiths with a hat-trick. Securing a one consolation goal was Tom Jones.

The Marford and Gresford game with Llangollen was canned as the visitors could not raise a team.

There was a fair share of league action in the morning and in the Under 12 League Section One, there was excitement galore at Rossett where leaders Marchwiel beat second placed Marford and Gresford 2-1. Declan Randles had provided Marford hope cancelling out an Elis Gerrard opener but a stunning strike from Jack Jones was worthy of winning any game.

Rhosddu United were forced to share eight goals and the points with Brymbo Lodge. Their marksmen were Jack Edwards, Hugh Jones, Jake Ryan and Gareth Evans with man of the Rhys Underhill grabbing all four of the visitors response.

Penycae Youth slammed Garden Village 6-3. On target were Iwan Hampson(2), Albert Mynit(2) an og and Luke Peters. Reducing the arrears were Pierce Blythin and Jake Robertson(2).

Luke Roberts bagged a hat-trick for Llay United as they defeated Maelor Youth 4-1. Matt Doutch made sure of the points with Andy Kirk hitting back.

Whitegate Youth came good to defeat Coedpoeth United 4-0, their marksmen were Dylan Harper(2), Rhys Loos and Callum Williams.

In Section Two, league leaders Ruthin Town slammed Bala Juniors 6-3. On the score-sheet were Tomos G Jones, Connor Lloyd, Luke Humphreys, Tomos Evans and an OG.

Josh Williams struck twice as Johnstown defeated Brickfield Rangers 3-0. Sealing their success was Scott Leicki.

The Llangollen game against Borras Park Rangers ebbed and flowed with Rangers just shading matters 5-4. Making up the Rangers nap hand were a 25 yard vip from Jack Roberts. George Bailey, Callum Jones and Ross Bignall(2). Hitting back were Tom Mayers, Jordan Hughes(2) and John Jones.

The Cefn United game against Marford/Gresford was cancelled due to a break in at the hosts changing rooms at Ty Mawr.

In the Under 13 League Section One, Borras Park Albion were floored 7-1 by Brickfield Rangers whose marksmen were Jck Rolt(2), Jordon Daviesm Jay Davies, Cameron Woolnough, Nathan Kearlsey and Matt Onissithurou. Replying for Albion was Jack Walker.

In Section Two, Llangollen did really well to hold Johnstown Youth to a 4-4 draw. The hosts scorers were Will Pluves, Jay Bloc, James Fell and Ryan Walker. Responding were Ryan Hanmer, Adam Hughes(2) and Josh Evans.

FC Garden Village were trounced by rampant Rhostyllen Youth 11-0. Leading their rout with a four goal salvo was Keiran Taylor. Sharing the remaining goals were John Bloor, Nathan Davies(2), Shane Jones, Matt Dood, Mike Constanzo and Ryan Pritchard.

In the Under 14 League Section One the long awaited dual between leaders Ruthin and second placed Brymbo Lodge turned out to be something of a ‘damp squib’ affair with Lodge getting crushed 7-0. Leading the Ruthin rampage with a double salvo was Nidion Jones. Adding to this tally were Ciran Jones, Stephen Wilsdon, Emyr Gwynydd, Tirion Roberts and Harri Owen.

Grabbing the headlines was Dean Williams of Johnstown who snatched his 100th goal in Youth football as his side defeated Rhosddu 3-0. A brace of goals from Matthew Smith had opened the scoring.

Dai Davies was in prolific form for Bala Juniors, he weighed in with a five goal salvo as his side defeated Marchwiel Colts 10-0.

FC Borras Park Rangers defeated Borras Park Albion 1-0.

Turning to Section Two, Garden Village have gone level on points with Borras Park Rangers who did not play. Village were in rampant mood when beating Mold Juniors 4-2 and new signing Cian Jones on his debut opened their account from the penalty spot. Adam Denoven scored a ‘peach’ of a goal with a long range effort from his own half. Cementing the success were Tom Duckett and Luke Davis.

The game between Acrefair and Coedpoeth United was evenly poised at 2-2 with time running out but in jury time Callum Doolan fired a last gasp winner to add to a two goal contribution from Kyle Reeves.

Dominic White scored twice for Marchwiel United as they narrowly defeated Marford and Gresford Youth 2-1.

Chirk Youth had no answer to in form Rhos Aelwyd who won this encounter in a canter 8-1. The games most outstanding player Ian Hughes bagged four of those goals with Alex Wills(2), Daniel Harrison and Steffan Parry completing the rout. Reducing the arrears was Ryan Kynnaston.

There were two UNDER 14 League Cup games being contested and we witnessed Park Youth over powering the Under 13 Ruthin Town side 8-0. Accountable for the whitewash were Andy Barritt with a treble, Will Poole, Chris Walsh, Tyrone Hopson, an OG and Dave Jenkins.

Booking a place in the next round were Rhos Aelwyd who edged out Chirk Youth at Under 13 level 3-2. On target for Chirk was Jack Weir.
