WREXHAM AND DISTRICT YOUTH LEAGUE

Saturday 1st March 2008

Summary by Phil Jones

The wind proved to be a great leveller at the weekend with the gale force conditions wreaking havoc.

Centre stage we had the NEFA Cup quarter finals and Hawarden Rangers like they so often do, came across the youth border on a mission and they were worthy 3-0 winners at Brickfield who to be fair held their own for large parts of this game. The deciding factor was the form of Rangers striker Tom Bonney who was strong as an ox and his excellent contribution was rewarded with a hat-trick.

There was a nine goal thriller at Llay United who were just outshaded by the odd goal against Chirk Youth who went nap through Jordan Owen(2) and Naz Fahat who converted a hat-trick to win this thriller 5-4.

Out go Rhosddu United who were scalped 4-0 by Mold Juniors.

Ruthin Town booked a safe passage after edging out Buckley Town 3-1 and making quite an impact were Iolo Hughes with a brace of goals and Kristian Pierce.

In the afternoon programme we had six games in the opening round of the Kevin Wright Memorial Cup and making an immense impression were Park Youth who savaged Garden Village 6-1 with efforts from Aled Evans, Deiniol Williams, Liam Nicholson(2), Luke Robertss and Sion Davies.

Coedpoeth United Under 15’s led through an own goal against Bala Juniors who cam egood in the end to win 4-1.

Sol Dolby hit back for Johnstown Youth before they bowed out 3-1 against Ruthin Town who wYFC U15

The Llangollen versus Coedpoeth United clash was halted due to an unplayable pitch

There was just the one Under 16 game and Rhostyllen dropped points in a thrilling 1-1 draw with neighbours Rhos Aelwyd after John McGrath had provided the hosts with an early lead.

In the semi final of the Under 16 League Cup, Borras Park halted the progress of Marford and Gresford Albion by clinching a 5-1 verdict but the game was much closer than the scoreline suggested with Albion protected a 1-0 lead for most of this match through a Rob Morris penalty but in a late fightback, Albion hit back through Danny Jones, Dean Matthews, Nathan Williams, Scott Evans and Pharavee Thongsaquc.

Back to the league action then, in the Under 12 League Section One, Brymbo Lodge missed a glorious chance to go top and they were sunk 3-2 in their own back yard by Marchwiel United whose marksmen were Nicky Hughes(2) and Richard Bevis who mastered the conditions far better than their hosts who hit back through two second half goals from Matt Jones.

James Harris, Jack Morgan and Connor Redmond(2) enabled Chirk Youth to topple Brickfield Rangers 4-2.

Llangollen Youth avenged an early season scalping by Marford and Gresford Albion who they tamed with ease this time around 6 goals to nil. Making up the Llan ‘brushing’ were James Fell, skipper Will Pluves who netted a goal in each half, Ryan Walker and Jordan Evans.

It is amazing how Whitegate Wanderers continue to offer so many teams two and three players extra each week and last weekend wih just 9 players they beat Cefn United 9-2. Ace predator Jordan Davies fired a five goal salute with Bradley Sandford getting a hat-trick , Jay Davies weighing in with a four goal salvo with Josh Evans(2) replying to the Whitegate the goal glut.

All of the top teams in Section Two came through unscathed and league leaders Borras Park Rangers defeated Maelor Youth by a double figure margin. Amongst their scorers were Luke White, an OG, Danny Jarrett(2), Jack Davies, Lewis Edwards(2), Jack Edwards and Scott Jones(2)

Coedpoeth United almost caused an upset but visiting Rhos Aelwyd just nicked the points with a narrow 4-3 success with goals from Geraint Andrews, Jake Allen, Dylan Williams and Will McKnight but Nathan Williams, James Rumsey and Joe Williams had the hosts in with a shout.

Garden Village are still in the title hunt best emphasised by their 9-0 drubbing of Rhosddu United. Man of the match Sam Molyneux notched a hat-trick and completing the rout were Ross White(2), James Gardner(2), Macauley Hart and an OG.

Ryan Gears-Pope, Jake Ellison, Ryan Hanmer saw Johnstown Youth chalk up a 4-1 triumph over Borras Park Albion who hit back through Jacob Jones.

Ruthin Town proved too hot for Llay United to handle and they roared to an 11-1 victory. Llyr Morris bagged four goals, Cai Davies and Guto Jones notched two goals apiece with Meredydd Jones, Ifan Roberts and Josh Carney completing the romp. Reducing the deficit was Callum Preston.

There were a few shock results in the Under 13 league, non more so than the win in Section One by Brymbo Lodge who tamed FC Borras Park Rangers 3-1. Matt Turner, Jake James and John Paul Weston are all showing what a class act they are these days and all getting on the scoresheet after Zac Butler had give Rangers an early lead following a wind assisted inswinging corner.

Hats off to Rhosddu who prized a point out of runaway league leaders Mold Juniors and this perhaps proved to be the best result of the day. Dave Bowen and Dan Jones got the Rhosddu goals but their unsung hero was goalkeeper Nathan Jones who was in immaculate form. Mold had been on taget through Adam Offless and Tom Gillett.

Chirk Youth were overpowered 5-2 in their own back yard by Llangollen Youth. Ben Wilson and Connor Morris replied for Chirk but Llan went nap through man of the match Alan Jones, Joe Morris, Daniel Weir and Ryan Curphey(2).

Johnstown Youth were second best in their local derby dual with Rhos Aelwyd who came through unscathed with strikes from skipper Daniel Harrison who was also man of the match plus Ian Hughes.

Marchwiel Colts had no answer to the swashbuckling form of Brickfield Rangers who picked them off 12-0. Amongst the Rangers goal scorers were Kamil Bancer, an OG, Alex Powell, Ryan Hughes(2), Steve Watkins, Joe Joscandariago and Luke Bowen(2).

Turning to Section Two league leaders Borras Park Rangers almost came unstuck at the vastly improved Marford and Gresford Albion who once more were in a stubborn mood but just narrowly lost out 1-0 after a a strike from Curtis Neary proved decisive.

Dominic White fired a lone reply for Borras Park Albion in their 3-1 home defeat by Marchwiel United whose marksmen were Eddie Evans who weighed in with a double salvo and Dominic White.

FC Brickfield had no answer to the rampant Acrefair Youth who had the days highest scorers in Tom May who netted six goals. Adding to the tally were Jack Arthur, Les Morris with a hat-trick,Josh Hogkinson(2), Aled Parry(2) and Owen Roberts.

Garden Village peppered Bala Juniors 7-1 to keep their title dreams alive. Hari Gould opened the Village account with a fine solo goal, Tom Duckett converted a hat-trick with Luke Jones, Jim Lee and Sam Felgate making it a perfect day.

There was a scant Under 14 League programme in Section One
Bala came out on tops against Brymbo Lodge and they captured a narrow 2-1 victory.

Matt Kaldowski weighed in with a four goal salvo and increasing their tally in the 6-1 win against Corwen were Taylor Rogers and Dale Edwards.

Marchwiel United made the most of Maelor Youth forced into fielding an under strength team and they chalked up a convincing 16-2 victory but James Morrison and Adam Williams salvaged some pride.

In the Girls soccer Brickfield defeated Coedpoeth quite convincingly 7-0. On target were Emma Lewis(2), Lindsey Wiliams(2), Lowis Jones, Heather Davies and Cari Macfarlane.

Marford and Gresford Albion are improving very week and their strong determination saw them account for hosts Park Youth by 3 goals to one courtesy of strikes from Lauren Jones, Helena Griffiths and Aimee Phillips after Anya Randles had opened Park’s account.

Beth White, Jodie Richards, Abby Hughes and Beth Jones combined for Penycae to plot the downfall of Buckley Town 4-1. Hitting back was Danielle Jones.

At the weekend we had the opening game in the under 18's schools international between Wales and R. of Ireland (Centenary shield).

Wales opened the scoring early in the first half when Marc Evans (Coleg Menai) latched on to a fine pass from Dafydd Jones (Whitchurch High School, Cardiff) and his first time shot beat the advancing Irish keeper and caught the travelling Irish squad cold.

Rep of Ireland soon settled into their game and began to keep the Welsh back four busy but they held firm with some resolute defending until the break. The second half started in the same fashion as the opening half ended with Rep searching for a deserved equaliser. It wasn't long when from a corner and some slack marking by the Welsh gifted the opposition to the equaliser from within the 6 yard box.

Changes where made by both teams in search for the winner and it was the Rep of Ireland who got it in the dying minutes with an almost identical close range strike that gave the Welsh boys little chance to respond and the opening defeat in the Centenary shield was hard to swallow after a gutsy display by the improving Welsh team. They next travel to Dundee on March 14th to take on Scotland.

Local boys Stefan Edwards (Ysgol Rhiwabon) and Michael Cronshaw (Connah's Quay High school) impressed and look certain to keep their places with substitute Aaron Aby (Yale College) hoping for a change of fortune in a couple of weeks time.
